Enter Central Park at 72nd Street and 5th Avenue, walk a little way, and you’ll end up at Bethesda Terrace, my favorite place in New York. Bethesda Terrace consists of an upper terrace overlooking Bethesda Fountain and the Lake, and a lower terrace lined with sandstone pillars and ornate ceilings. Bethesda Terrace is considered the heart of Central Park.

Northern view of Bethesda Fountain.

View across the Lake of the Loeb Boathouse.
On any given day, you’re likely to see all sorts of people around Bethesda Terrace.
A boy listens to musicians on the lower level.
A man plays Jazz on his saxophone.
A couple takes wedding photos by Bethesda Fountain.
A man walks his horse-drawn carriage.
Just south of Bethesda Terrace is a beautiful tree-lined area of the Mall. You can follow this walk all the way to the southern entrance to the park.
