Earlier this month, I took the tram to Roosevelt Island. Why? I suppose living in Sutton Place and walking by it so often finally sparked my curiosity. I’m a sucker for a good view, and one day I just couldn’t help myself. I was surprised to find out that it only cost $2.50, the same fare as the subway, and you can use your MetroCard. The 5-minute ride takes you over the East River adjacent to the 59th Street Bridge (now the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge), and drops you off on Roosevelt Island, a long narrow island between Manhattan and Queens.
Board the tram at 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. The platform is a few stories up a red and yellow staircase, which you can’t miss if walking by. The tram runs every 15 minutes.
On the way, you get a nice aerial view up and down First and Second Avenues. This is the view looking north on First Avenue.
If you haven’t already realized, this tram drops you off on Roosevelt Island. Who goes to Roosevelt Island? Well, I discovered some interesting things about the little island when I was there…
I love that City Gal helped to inspire your visit to New York! Hope you enjoyed!
I grew up outside NYC and have been to the city too many times to count but I have never ridden the Roosevelt Island Tram! I really missed out on this one. The journey and your photos look incredible!
I walked by it twice a day for a year before I decided to hop on! Always amazes me how easy it is to skip over the things we have such easy access to!
