Exit the Harajuku Station on the Yamanote Line in Tokyo and you will face the entrance to Takeshita Dori, the famous shopping street where young Japanese flock. Each day, the street is filled with young people dressed in Harajuku street style, which encompasses multiple styles including punk, babydoll and goth. The shops on Takeshita cater to the Harajuku style, selling inexpensive clothing, jewelry and makeup. My friend Kayoko, who lives in Tokyo, opted to spend this time shopping in Ginza, the upscale shopping district where I was staying, instead of hanging out with me in Harajuku. Apparently Harajuku isn’t for everyone, but as a New Yorker and someone who is interested in fashion and style, it’s so unique and so iconic, I couldn’t pass up the experience!

I love how anything goes in Harajuku.
I’m pretty sure if I was Japanese, my pink hair and I would have been hanging out in Harajuku circa 1996.
Sunday is the big day on Takeshita Street, where you can see many traditional Harajuku Girls dressed in elaborate costumes and anime. I was there on a Tuesday and only saw a few.

I highly recommend checking out Harajuku on a Sunday if it fits with your schedule. If you can’t make it on a Sunday, it’s worth seeing Harajuku on another day. You won’t see as many elaborate costumes, but you can still get a feel for the area and the street style of those who spend time there.

I went to Japan for the first time last summer, and the Japanese fashion was definitely one of my favorite parts! For a culture that all walks the same direction on the subway platforms (take notes, New Yorkers!), they definitely know how to show their own unique styles when it comes to attire!:-)
The Chanel store in Ginza was super cool!
I took a ton of photos when I walked through this area, it is such eye candy!
I know! I wish I’d been in Tokyo on a Sunday, but was still so much fun!
Such interesting looks! I think I’d be caught people watching for hours here.
