Greetings from Phuket! I decided to make a quick stop in Phuket Town to check out the night market (sometimes called the weekend market), open every weekend from late afternoon into the evening just outside Phuket Town. I’m pretty sure if I don’t get sick from eating massive quantities of street food last night, I’m probably not going to.
Fruit. If you’re looking for something relatively healthy, the Phuket night market has a wide selection of regional fruits.
This is a pineapple.
Vegetables. You must try the corn on the cob. It’s delicious.
Thai beans.
Kabobs. Kabobs are big in Thai street food. Try them. You may not always know what you’re eating, but they’re usually pretty good.
Seafood. From shellfish to fried fish filet, the Phuket night market has a bit of everything.
Sushi. I was in Japan last week, so I’m feeling a bit sushi snobbish right now. I opted to skip (though it looked good).
Bugs. Yes, bugs. People do eat them. The bugs are fried and sauce is added for flavor. I tried a locust in Bangkok. It tasted like a crunchy soft shell crab.
As I was standing at the food stall, a Thai woman purchased a large bag of maggots. I asked her what they tasted like, and she responded in a Thai accent: “Oh, they taste very very good.”
So, when in Thailand… The maggots were crunchy on the outside (from being fried), but mushy and soft inside. Had I not known they were maggots, they wouldn’t have tasted like bugs.
Unappealing items. Then there were things even I had no interest in tasting!
Sweets. And finally – my personal favorite – dessert! I hate to admit how much sugar I consumed last night. Totally worth it.
The Phuket night market also sells clothing, jewelry and souvenirs (though a bit overpriced). If you find yourself in Phuket on the weekend, I highly recommend saving some stomach space for the night market.

Besides the bugs and pig snouts, it all looks amazing! I love a good local market! Happy travels:-)
Thanks! As sad as I am to return soon, at least I’m returning to someplace I love!
You’re a braver woman than I! Recently in Korea I was faced with a plate of beondegi (boiled silk worm pupae) and I just couldn’t bring myself to try one. I’ll try any fruit of vegetable but when it comes to protein… not so much.
I know. I really will try anything. And I never seem to get full!
Duck heads I understand passing, but you REALLY missed out on the pig snouts!
GROSS. Even by MY standards!
Interesting choice of food. I like to try street food. Some of them look really good. Although I’ve been to Thailand, I haven’t been to Phuket. Thinking of going there next year so this is useful information, thanks! 🙂
I love street food! I went to Phuket just to check out this market! Old Phuket Town is cool and Phang Nga Bay (accessible from Krabi and Phi Phi as well) is beautiful, but otherwise you don’t need much time in Phuket. Def worth checking out though!
OMG, this was a gastronomical delight until I scrolled all the way down. I am planning a trip to Phuket and bumped into your site searching for food in Phuket.
Lol now I know the foods I should try and avoid.
The weekend market was my favorite part of Phuket. Visit Phuket Town for a bit before, it’s very cute.
