In addition to being a center for culture and history, Harlem is home to some of the best restaurants in New York City. While soul food reigns supreme, Harlem’s bakeries should not be overlooked. No matter what fancies your sweet tooth, you can find it at a Harlem bakery.
Best Rugelach – Lee Lee’s Baked Goods
Lee Lee’s homemade rugelach may actually be the best rugelach in New York City.
The shop is kitchy and welcoming – think mismatched chairs and a mom and pop atmosphere. If you can’t make it to the shop, you can order Alvin Lee’s famous rugelach from Lee Lee’s website.
Cutest Bakery – Make My Cake (St. Nicholas Avenue location)
Life is a Cakewalk! Words to live by.
Make My Cake is filled with pink cupcake signs and vintage ovens.
The baked goods are pretty good, too. Soon, you’ll be able to order cupcakes, pies and cheesecakes directly from Make My Cake’s website.
Best Mini Cupcake – Tonnie’s Minis
Even the gate is covered in cupcakes!
Tonnie’s Minis delivers mini cupcakes throughout the borough of Manhattan.
Best Cookie – Levain Bakery
The cookies at Levain Bakery are soft and gooey and positively delicious.
So what’s your favorite Harlem Bakery?

The great thing about each of the bakeries is that they all have their specialty. Red velvet cake is hands down Make my Cake, but for cupcakes I would go with Tonnies. If I want a huge, rich cookie then I go to Levain, but if I want some homestyle delights I go to Mr. Lee’s. For carrot cake Lloyd’s has it. There are some tasty bakeries over in East Harlem work exploring as well. For bread I would head over to Hot Bread at La Marqueta.
Thanks so much for the additional suggestions! We’ll make sure to try them soon!
Aaah, Harlem! You’ve hit some of my favorite spots.
So many great places up there! 😉
Was just talking to one of my good friends in NYC about how I MUST do a Harlem food tour next time we are in the city. These all look so yummy and I love your photos!
SO many great places in Harlem – totally worth it!
