Bhaktapur is located about 45 minutes east of Kathmandu. It’s a pedestrian city — quieter, slower, and better preserved than Kathmandu. However, it also seemed to have been hit much harder by the earthquake than Kathmandu. If you plan to stay in Bhaktapur, I recommend staying at the Peacock Guest House.

Kathmandu is one of my favorite cities in the world. My first visit to Nepal wasn’t long after the 2015 earthquake leveled parts of the city. I highly recommend staying at the Kasthamandap Boutique Hotel, a lovely hotel conveniently located in Thamel. If you have time, you can also visit Patan and Bhaktapur.
